ABI Research recently reported that the global mobile app marketplace will exceed $30 billion in 2012. This numer is nearly double the 2011 total and includes all app download costs, in-app purchases, in-app advertisements, and subscription fees.
Of the four leading mobile app marketplaces, iOS, Android, Windows Phone OS, and Rim's BBI; the large revenue spike is largely attributed to recent changes to the Android marketplace. As Google transitioned the garage sale style Android Market into the more polished Google Play, it is estimated that Android developer's total market share has increased to a third of total revenue. Furthermore, both Microsoft and RIM have further developed the monetization strategies of their respective platoorms, contributing to 2012's rapid gains.
$30 billion... thats roughly three times the annual revenue generated at domestic box offices. Maybe it's time to switch industries.
