Placed launches Panels to help companies gather and analyze location data
Consumer location data and the associated local search domain is a sought after areas of digital marketing. Companies like Foursquare have worked for several years via check-ins and badges and mayorships to encourage people to share their location information.
Placed is a Seattle based analytics startup that has taken a more direct approach to gathering location data. Simply ask or even offer to donate to local charities for people to download their app.
Its a small start but a very direct and results oriented approach. The capital investment in comparison to something like foursquare is very small and much more effective. Companies can essentially design a co-branded app which the users will download to let them track user traffic in locations and areas directly with nightly reports etc. No longer do the companies have to rely on survey companies to derive market research over extended periods of time.
This has the potential of changing on how businesses target consumers on a location basis.
