Has social media turned us into braggarts?

There is an interesting series of articles of how social media has turned our society into a culture of sharing trivial details of our life. More accurately, many are guilty of advertising how awesomely happy (and perfect) their lives, relationships and babies are.

WSJ’s observations on the phenomenon of bragging: Are We All Braggarts Now?

Forbes’ more recent article on social media etiquette to avoid appearing as a braggart: Bragging on Social Media - Four Ways to Avoid Oversharing

The WSJ article discusses how people perceive others based on their status updates. For example, I always wonder about couples that wish their spouses on their anniversary on Facebook. Their spouse is no doubt the best spouse ever per their status update but don’t they live together and wouldn’t it be much more intimate and special to wish your spouse at home?

Bottom line: I think most people miss that fact that they need to be living when instead they are spending needless amounts of time informing others of how much they are living. The Toyota Venza commercial really covers this idea well.

  1. Mallika,

I don't know about anyone else, but I have the most awesomely happy and perfect life and relationship. And if I had any babies, they'd be awesomely happy and perfect, too.

And yes, it is extremely necessary for me to share this as often as possible, on as many websites as possible.

    Best regards,

    Brad ;)
